Shankrith Natarajan (Lead DR)
Biography
Hey Everyone! I’m Shankrith and I am a first year Applied Math MS student at Columbia. I did my undergraduate study in Mechanical Engineering from RVCE, Bangalore, India.
About Shankrith
I’m looking to enter the Finance world as a Quant Researcher or a Data Scientist. In my free time, I love watching movies (Super excited for No Time to Die and Dune) and I spend an unhealthy amount of time on Reddit. I also watch and actively follow NBA games, Cricket, and Tennis.
I joined EGSC because I would like to plan social events, career and alumni events for students of the APAM department to take full advantage of the diverse backgrounds of all our peers here at Columbia. I believe that this would foster great relationships among our peers and create strong networks.

Biography
Hello, I am a MS student studying Applied Mathematics with an expected graduation date of December 2022.

I studied Economics and International Relations at USC (Los Angeles, CA) during undergrad, and I’ve had a career in the fields of Economics Research, Antitrust Consulting, and most recently Data Science. Biography
I am a 4th year PhD student in Applied Physics working with Alex Gaeta on quantum and nonlinear photonics. I’m excited to once again serve as a DR for the department.

Selma Marrakchi (Lead DR)
Biography
Hello!
I’m a Master’s student in Biomedical Engineering expecting to graduate in December 2022. I am the Lead Department Representative for Biomedical Engineering as well as the Internal Vice President of the Graduate Organization for Biomedical Engineers (GoBME). I am currently specializing in Bioinformatics and Machine Learning and working in the Chemical Genomics Laboratory.
About Selma
Prior to that, I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience from UCLA and worked as an EEG/neurofeedback tech. In my free time, I enjoy working out, cooking, playing music, and exploring the city for new hidden gems. I also love meeting new people from the various departments at SEAS and from the wonderfully diverse Columbia student body in general. Let’s be friends!

Kristen Lawlor
Biography
Hi! My name is Kristen and I’m a 5th year PhD candidate in Qi Wang’s laboratory. My research at Columbia focuses on the neural circuitry of signal processing.
About Kristen
I’m originally from Princeton, New Jersey and completed my undergraduate degree in bioengineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. Outside of research, I love running, solo backpacking, hiking and exploring the city with friends.
In 2021, I served as EGSC President and I am excited to continue to serve as a Department Representative this year! EGSC is an integral part of the SEAS community and I am happy to be able to continue to advocate for our students and improve student life.

Howard Nicholson III
Biography
Hey! My name is Howard and I am so excited to serve as a DR this year. I am a first-year PhD student advised by Dr. Clark Hung in the Cellular Engineering Laboratory.
About Howard
I grew up in Rockville, Maryland and recently graduated from the University of Maryland Baltimore County with a B.S. in Chemical engineering and minor in music. My research will focus on understanding how physical and chemical stimuli impact cells and tissues in order to incorporate these forces in strategies for developing functional tissue substitutes of clinical relevance. I am also interested in investigating how bias and racism may lead to inequity in healthcare and biomedical innovation.

Hello, I’m Guntaash, a MS express student studying biomedical engineering. My concentration is in Bioinformatics and Machine Learning. In alignment to that, my research interest is in applying machine learning techniques to biological data, to find solutions for unmet clinical needs.

I hail originally from Vancouver, Canada (shout-out to my Canadians) and completed my Bachelor’s in ChemBE at Johns Hopkins University. Healthcare is my passion, and I’m always down to discuss the latest drug development trends or interesting M&As in the pharma/biotech world.

In the Fall of 2020 I moved across the country to NYC from Los Angeles, where I had previously completed my MS degree at USC.

Hello everyone! My name is Lingyu, it means ‘above the clouds’ in Chinese. For some reason people seems to find my English name Michael easier to pronounce, so you can call me that too.
About Lingyu
I am a first year master student in EE, expected to graduate in Dec 2022. I am from Beijing, China and I went to Nanjing University as an undergrad. It’s funny because Beijing means ‘North City’ and Nanjing means ‘South City’. And I’ve flown from the East glode to the West!
My current interest is in deep learning algorithms for image processing, but I’m generally passionate about AI and what it is capable of doing. Aside from that I also like to produce hip hop music and write zombie stories.

Hello folks! You can call me Santa. I am a MS student in the EE department expected to graduate in December 2022.
About Santanab
I completed my undergrad from India, and have since worked in Consulting at Deloitte before exploring Entrepreneurship in the Automation and Building Energy domain. I am passionate about Sustainability and aim to pursue a career in the Sustainable Energy and Development sector. I love learning about new cultures over a plate of shared food, conversation and stories.
Over the summer during course registration, and the first few weeks of classes, I came across a few instances of resource and process gaps that I feel would improve student life if addressed. I am equally passionate about addressing common causes that make life easier for everyone. And that’s what motivated me to apply to the EGSC, so that I can play a more active role to improve student life here at Columbia.

Hola, I am Rong Chen from China and I am a MS student in EE department. I will graduate in December, 2022.

I came to the U.S. when I was a junior in high school, and I was at seattle. Then, I completed my undergrad in upstate NY. I have experienced life in both east and west coast and am still struggled to choose which one is better.

Hi all! I am a 3rd year PhD student in the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics lab, under Dr. Gerard Ateshian. My research focuses on studying the mechanical properties of cartilage tissue, and how those properties change with pathology.

🙋♂️ I’m a Master’s student studying Mechanical Engineering (concentration in Robotics) with an expected graduation of May 2022.

I have lived in Abu Dhabi, Indianapolis and New Jersey - but I am now convinced that New York City is where I want to be after graduating. Hi everyone! I’m an M.S. Mechanical Engineering student, concentrating in Energy Systems.
About Minh
I’m from a small town in Vietnam and grew up in South Florida, so I love the beach, love the outdoors...and currently, I’m learning to love this city!
I want to work on climate solutions and I’m thrilled to be at SEAS because here, we engineer for humanity. I’m excited to be a DR with EGSC because I get to help create positive experiences for my fellow cohort who also want to make the most of our graduate degree before heading out to work on the big, hairy problems.

Shubhajeet Goswami
Biography
Hi everyone!
I am in my first year of MS in Mechanical Engineering. I am from Mumbai, India and did my undergrad there.
About Shubhajeet
I am excited to be a DR as I will be able to put forward students’ concerns and meet new people. Outside academics, I love being outdoors, working out in the gym and playing soccer.

Mark Barbet
Biography
Hi everyone! I’m a final year Mechanical Engineering PhD student, hoping to graduate sometime mid-2022. My research focuses on applications of automation and machine learning to combustion chemistry. Before Columbia, I studied aerospace engineering and physics at the University of Florida.
About Mark
I served in the mechanical engineering grad association as treasurer/social chair in 2017, and joined EGSC in 2018 as a DR. In 2019, I served as the social chair for EGSC before returning to a DR role to focus on research.
Outside of research and student life, you can find me working out in the gym, running, or going out downtown to try a new restaurant or bar! I recently (this year) started skiing and plan to do a lot more of that this winter!
